How To Get Rat King Catalyst

This quick guide will tell you everything there is to know about Rat King's catalyst.

Namely, how to get it, how to unlock it once you've found it, and more importantly, is it even worth it?

And that last part is important because Exotic catalysts can be extremely hard to find and/or unlock, but the benefits are not always up to par.

How to get Rat King's catalyst

First things first, before talking about the catalyst for this cool team-oriented sidearm, you may not even have the weapon itself yet. If that's the case, this is how you get it:

How to get the Rat King?

Destiny 2 Rat King artGetting the Rat King is as simple as it can be: It can only be obtained via the Exotic Kiosk (Monument to Lost Lights) by the vaults in the Tower.

The Rat King doesn't require any particular Expansion and can be purchased by any free-to-play account. To buy one from the kiosk, you will need to spend:

  • 1 Exotic Cipher
  • 1 Ascendant Shard
  • 150 Helium Filaments
  • 100,000 Glimmer

You can read all about the Monument to Lost Lights, including costs and requirements, here.

How to get the catalyst?

The Rat King's catalyst, like many other exotic catalysts in the game, can be found by completing Strikes or Nightfalls.

Despite it being RNG-based (i.e. luck), with some luck, grinding for the catalyst will not take that long.

How to unlock the catalyst?

To unlock the catalyst, you will need to have a member of your Fireteam (not you!) defeat 1,000 enemies with a Rat King.

Can you farm the Rat King's catalyst?

As the Rat King's catalyst is RNG and drops from Strike/Nightfall completions, this catalyst can be technically farmed for. That said, it cannot be directly target-farmed, and you may even get other Exotic catalysts drop before you get the Rat King catalyst to finally drop.

When it comes to unlocking the Catalyst when found, there are definitely ways to farm it. The most famous method remains to visit the Shuro Shi checkpoint in the Last Wish raid. If you're unfamiliar with it, you can check this guide. But in this case, remember you need to bring Fireteam members with the Rat King equipped along for the ride.

Rat Kings Catalyst Perks

The catalyst for the Rat King adds the following perk:

  • Infestation: Increases aim assist and recoil direction. Refreshes health when Vermin activates.

Needless to say, these two additions are excellent for PVE, making this a top-tier catalyst for an already excellent PVE weapon!

Is it worth it?

This is a good catalyst, A-Tier:

  • S Tier – Best: Highest ranking catalysts in our Tier List.

The Rat King's catalyst definitely improves the underperforming weapon, however, not enough to make it competitive compared to the top tier weapons for either PVE no PVP.

The catalyst itself is actually quite good, the healing, when combined with other survival tools such as Wormhusk Crown with invisibility on Hunter can create quite a fun solo build, however, this goes against the fireteam nature of Rat King.

To sum things up:

  1. Rat King is an underperforming weapon and is slightly improved upon by the catalyst.
  2. The catalyst itself is fun and nice to use when you lean into the Rat King playstyle.
  3. Obtaining the catalyst is RNG dependent, however, the grind isn't too bad.

In conclusion, Rat King and its catalyst underperform in high-end PvE and PvP, however, it is still a fun combination that can see mild success when utilized correctly.
